Abstract:

The United Nations played an important role in stopping or mitigating the (Israeli) attacks on Lebanese soil through several methods that succeeded in some of them and failed in others. These methods were represented in its diplomatic efforts, conferences, and its special sessions that resulted in important decisions, especially during the Israeli invasion of Lebanon In 1978, most notably Resolution 425 and 426, through which the United Nations succeeded in ending the first Israeli invasion of Lebanon and placing international forces as a security belt between the Lebanese and Israeli borders and the withdrawal of the latter’s forces. While the United Nations faced great challenges in facing the second Israeli invasion of Lebanon in 1982, due to the great obstacles and difficulties that were represented by (Israel) ignoring some UN resolutions on the one hand and using the American veto against its decisions, which made its position extremely difficult, but that did not prevent it from continuing Its diplomatic and humanitarian efforts aiming at a cease-fire and sending humanitarian aid to the Lebanese people, and its condemnation of the brutal practices of the Israeli forces towards Lebanon by issuing many decisions.
