Compulsory conscription in Egypt and its impact on social reality 1805-1879

Abstract:

Conscription is one of the important studies that had a significant impact on the Egyptian social, political and economic reality. This topic is still far from academic studies, and has not received sufficient attention. Conscription was applied in the year 1805, which is the beginning of our study during the era of Muhammad Ali, and it was reflected on the social reality significantly. Egyptian society was not familiar with conscription before and considered it an aggressive phenomenon, forcing it to leave its land and migrate to places far from its home, and this affected the Egyptian economy because of the farmer’s migration to agricultural lands. He played a major role in alleviating the burden of conscription on the Egyptian farmer by issuing the lottery law in 1853. During the reign of Said Pasha, he witnessed great interest in the army and the improvement of its conditions. During the reign of Khedive Ismail, conscription expanded significantly similar to what it was in the era of Muhammad Ali, but at the same time he witnessed The Khedive era great interest in the army and important laws were put in the recruitment process, the most important of which is the monetary allowance law.
