Abstract:

The aim of the current research is to identify the effect of employing historical concepts with cognitive overlap according to the theory of working memory in the achievement and development of historical thinking among students of the history department.

To achieve this goal, the researcher formulated three hypotheses mentioned in the first chapter of the research, and the researcher chose an experimental design with partial control with two experimental and control groups by (34) students for each group.

For the purpose of conducting equivalence between the two groups, the researcher prepared a historical thinking test first, which is related to the subject of Islamic civilization for the third stage and consisted of (40) test items with three types of questions. After applying the two tests, he treated their results statistically according to the statistical hypotheses formulated by the researcher statistically.

The results of the research indicated the emergence of statistically significant differences in favor of the experimental group in the two post stories of statistical thinking and achievement test, and statistically significant differences appeared in favor of the experimental group in the historical thinking test (pre and post).
