Abstract:

The discussion dealt with the position of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on the Iraq-Kuwait crisis that began its signs after the end of the Iran-Iraq war in 1988, as Iraq witnessed during the period (1988-1989) a deterioration in its economic conditions and the accumulation of foreign debts due to its war with Iran, in addition to the increase of the State of Kuwait its share of Oil production, which contributed to a significant drop in its prices, these matters led to an exchange of accusations between the Iraqi governments and Kuwait, which led to an exacerbation of the crisis between them and the intervention of many Arab countries in order to find solutions to this crisis.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was one of the Arab countries that took a position on that crisis until its position was initially neutral and with the escalation of the crisis at the beginning of 1990 made it take a serious position in finding solutions to that crisis, especially during the period from May to July 1990, and it tried The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, in cooperation with the Egyptian side, persuaded the Iraqi and Kuwaiti governments to hold a direct meeting between them in order to find a suitable solution between the two sides. This was represented in the convening of the Jeddah conference on July 31, 1990, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia contributed during the conference to facilitate matters between the two countries, but its efforts It failed due to the intransigence of the Iraqi and Kuwaiti governments in their stances and their rejection of any solutions in order to find a settlement to the crisis that ended with the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait on August 2, 1990.
