This study is a qualitative one .<\/p>\n<p>The study aims to investigate the types of comment clauses used in the American Series \u201cFriends\u2019. The study also aims to investigate the pragmatic functions of these comment clauses and how they are used by the participants of the conversations in the American Series \u2018Friends\u2019 .The researcher assumes that \u00a0comment clauses are highly used in the American Series \u2018Friends\u2019 and ,due to the variety of the conversations , many types of comment clauses are used in these conversations . The data of the study is \u00a0conversations of\u00a0 the first episode of \u00a0seasons ( 1,2,5,6,9,10) of the American Series \u2018Friends\u2019 .The data of the study has been analyzed by adopting Quirk et al (1985) classification and functions\u00a0 of comment clauses .<\/p>\n<p>The analysis of the conversations shows that the\u00a0 type of comment clauses \u00a0\u00a0used in these\u00a0 conversations is that which is similar to the matrix of the main clause. Throughout the whole conversations , only the following forms of comment clauses are used : \u2018I mean\u2019, \u2018you know\u2019 , and \u2018I know\u2019. The analysis also shows that these comment clauses occurred \u00a0in the initial , middle \u00a0, and final positions of these conversations .The findings reveal \u00a0that these comment clauses have different pragmatic \u00a0functions ; \u00a0to express the speaker\u2019s certainty of his main statement , to put things right and express the main statement probably ,to attract the listener\u2019s attention ,to make sure that the listener fully understands the content of communication , and to express the speaker\u2019s informality and warmth towards the hearer
